More than 1,100 corporate sponsors and donors supported Community Hope’s 20th Anniversary Sparkle of Hope Gala on October 19, 2016 to honor Kenneth C. Frazier, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Merck.

Mr. Frazier was recognized for Merck’s spearheading of the Veterans Justice Initiative, established in 2011 to provide legal aid to the homeless veterans Community Hope serves.

It was Community Hope’s largest gala in the 20 years since pharmaceutical leader Fred Hassan, then-Chief Executive Officer of Pharmacia & Upjohn, founded the event to ensure sufficient community-based services to coincide with the pharmaceutical advancements in mental health treatment. Following recognition of Mr. Hassan’s two decades of leadership and commitment, Brent Saunders, CEO and President of Allergan plc, was named the 2017 Leadership Chair. Since 1997, the Sparkle of Hope event has raised more than $11 million and continues to grow into an event that brings together the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in support of a common cause.

Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno introduced keynote speaker James Purcell, who served for ten years in the military, saying “his story is one of finding his way back with the help of this amazing organization and – in doing so—finding that he still had something left to give by helping other veterans.”  Purcell now provides peer support to veterans struggling with combat trauma, homelessness and addiction.

Also featured at the evening’s event was the unveiling of Community Hope’s newest video, “From Despair to Dignity”, produced pro bono by the advertising agency H4B Catapult/Havas Health.

Community Hope gratefully acknowledges the support of our Gala Co-Chairs and 2016 Event Sponsors.
